We are often asked 'Why should I drink purified water?' Here's why! For those that live in urban areas, chlorine is added to the water to kill bacteria & viruses. This is literally a poison! What does it do to our natural bacteria present in our stomachs and how does this affect our digestion of nutrients? How does the extra stress of the chemicals in our bodies affect our long term immune system function?
Our bodies are approximately 70% water. All our living cells require water to function and communicate with each other. Water is required to lubricate our joints, carry nutrients to our cells & remove our cells waste products. We acknowledge treatment of urban water is necessary, but do believe we need to take more care ingesting the final product. Drinking water that contains chemicals only adds to the strain our bodies and immune system have to cope with. Anyone who does is risking their quality of health & therefore their long term quality of life!
And for those in rural areas, your water may be infected with any number of viruses, bacteria or man made pollutants. Things such as Cryptosporidium, a parasite found in the gut of birds, fish, reptiles (e.g., geckos and turtles), humans and animals such as cattle, sheep, cats and dogs. It is passed on in the faeces (poo, tutae) of infected animals and humans. Cryptosporidium is widespread in New Zealand and the parasites can live in the environment for long periods, especially in lake, river, stream and roof water. People become infected when they swallow the parasites. This may be from contaminated water and food, or from contact with infected animals or humans.
Cryptosporidium may cause:
- Diarrhoea (often watery).
- Stomach cramps and abdominal pain.
- Lack of appetite.
- Weight loss.
- The infection may be prolonged and life threatening to people with a weakened immune system.
So why not just drink bottled water? Bottled water is healthy water -- right?
That's what the marketers would have us believe. Just look at the labels or the bottled water ads: deep, pristine pools of spring water, majestic alpine peaks, healthy, active people gulping down icy bottled water between biking in the park and a trip to the yoga studio. In reality, bottled water is just water and much of it is filtered water from town supplies.
Bottled water isn't a good value!
- Bottled water costs 1,000 times the price per volume of tap water.
- Studies have shown that in many cases, filtered tap water is actually purer than many bottled waters.
- A litre of bottled water often costs more than a litre of gas.
Bottled water means garbage.
Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. That plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. And while the plastic used to bottle beverages is of high quality and in demand by recyclers, over 80 percent of plastic bottles are simply thrown away. Thanks to its slow decay rate, the vast majority of all plastics ever produced still exist ... somewhere.
So do your bit for the environment and for your health.
